Technique matters: brushing and flossing that actually protects your teeth

Nothing you do for your teeth and gums matters more than daily oral hygiene, but the technique behind it makes all the difference. Two minutes of proper brushing and a minute of proper flossing each day prevents cavities, keeps gum disease at bay, and extends the life of your natural teeth. Rushed or sloppy technique, on the other hand, leaves plaque behind to keep doing damage.

Both techniques get a close look in this video. Brushing works best with the bristles tilted at roughly 45 degrees toward the gumline, moved in small circular sweeps, one or two teeth at a time, for a full two minutes. The inside surfaces and chewing surfaces deserve just as much attention as the fronts, since that's where most people leave spots untouched.

Flossing comes down to the C-shape: curve the floss around each tooth and work it gently up and down a few times just below the gumline, since snapping it straight up and down skips right past the surface where plaque actually builds up. Both habits belong in your daily routine, and at every cleaning we'll tell you how your home care is holding up.

Questions about the right brush, toothpaste, or technique for you are always welcome at your next visit to Dr. Raffi General & Implant Dentistry. A one-on-one demonstration is easy to arrange, and small adjustments here tend to make a noticeable difference.
