WatchNutrition & Your Teeth

What you eat shapes your teeth just as much as how you brush

Aside from brushing and flossing, nothing influences your cavity risk quite like what you eat and drink. Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars and certain carbohydrates and produce acids as a byproduct, and those acids demineralize enamel. Acidic drinks such as sodas and sports drinks go after the enamel directly, and when the two overlap the damage compounds fast.

This video lays out the science in plain terms. Every snack or sip of something sugary or acidic drops the pH in your mouth and sets off an acid attack. The longer food lingers on your teeth, and the more times a day you expose them to it, the more demineralization builds up, and that buildup is ultimately what starts a cavity.

Fortunately, your mouth isn't defenseless. Saliva clears away debris and carries calcium and phosphate that help remineralize enamel between exposures. A piece of sugar-free gum or a bit of cheese after eating boosts saliva flow and helps neutralize acids, and simply spacing out snacks gives your teeth time to recover in between.

These habits matter most when they start young, so tooth-friendly eating pays off for kids well into adulthood. Bring your nutrition questions to your next visit at Dr. Raffi General & Implant Dentistry, and we'll talk through practical changes that fit how your family actually eats.
