What a dental crown does for a weakened tooth at Dr. Raffi General & Implant Dentistry

A tooth-shaped cap that fits entirely over a weakened or damaged tooth, a dental crown restores strength, shape, and appearance in one piece. Teeth that are cracked, carry a large old filling, or have just had a root canal are especially vulnerable: ordinary chewing forces can finish the job and split them in two. A crown is what stands between that tooth and the fracture waiting to happen.

The full process is shown here. Once the area is comfortably numbed, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, an impression captures its exact form, and a temporary crown covers it while your permanent one is custom-made. At a follow-up visit, that final crown is cemented into place and adjusted until it fits your bite precisely.

Material choice depends on the tooth. Modern crowns come all-ceramic, all-metal, or as a combination, and your dentist will steer you toward whichever suits the tooth's location, your bite, and how natural you want the result to look. Ceramic tends to win out on front teeth for its esthetics, while back teeth often call for the added strength of a different build.

A crown's lifespan comes down largely to how it's cared for afterward. Daily brushing and flossing, a healthy diet, and keeping up with regular checkups let a well-made crown protect a tooth for a decade or longer.
